In essence, Firefly aims to bring communities closer not only for Malaysians but also for visiting travelers, be it from our neighboring countries or across the region. Ultimately, Firefly aims to connect Malaysia to the world and play its part in the ever-evolving economy of the communities it serves.

Getting to know Firefly

Launched on April 3rd 2007, Firefly, Malaysia’s first community airline, is operated under FlyFirefly Sdn Bhd, and is a wholly owned subsidiary of Malaysian Airline System Berhad. Operating out of its hub in Penang, Firefly provides new and exclusive routes to Kuantan, Kuala Terengganu, Kota Bharu and Langkawi in Malaysia, and to Phuket and Koh Samui in Thailand. Penang, being the second biggest hub in Malaysia after Kuala Lumpur, is a congregation point of many customer airlines and therefore the perfect touch point for new and seasoned travelers alike. From our hub, Firefly offers the quickest routes in the air within Peninsula Malaysia, as well as to some very famous tourist destinations in Thailand, aligning itself with the Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand Growth Triangle (IMTGT) agenda.

Much like a community in a segment of a society, Firefly places great emphasis on safety and comfort in its flying experience. With routes resembling the ‘path not taken’, passengers will get to their destinations in a much shorter time frame. “Firefly is about taking people off the roads, ferries and boats, and getting them to their destinations faster,” quotes Eddy Leong, Managing Director of Firefly. Providing an air service that is simple, no frills and cost effective makes flying Firefly a fun and smart choice.

What’s in a name

The name Firefly (in Mandarin fei1 ying2) was chosen to depict the airline’s characteristics, which are agility, brilliance, charm, and fun. Being unique and evocative, Firefly is easily recognizable and has the potential to grow and command a brand premium in the future. It won’t be long before Firefly becomes a household name!
